Management to Support Multiple Ecosystem Services from Productive Grasslands

چکیده

Sustainable intensification will require the development of new management systems to support global food demands, whilst conserving integrity ecosystem functions. Here, we test and identify strategies maintain or enhance agricultural production in grasslands simultaneously supporting provision multiple services. Over four years, investigated how establishment three plant functional groups (grasses, legumes, other flowering forbs), using different cultivation (minimum tillage deep ploughing) (cutting, grazing their intensity) techniques, affected complementarity between key These services were agronomic production, pollination, pest control, resources for farmland birds, soil We found that floristically diverse swards, particularly those containing grasses, legumes forbs, maximised forage yield quality, pollinator abundance, nitrogen, bird resources, as well enhancing populations natural predators pests. Cutting increased pests without depleting considered. However, a single solution maximise delivery all is unlikely exist, trade-offs also occurred. Consequently, options may need be tailored strategically localised deficits

Perennial grasslands enhance biodiversity and multiple ecosystem services in bioenergy landscapes.

Agriculture is being challenged to provide food, and increasingly fuel, for an expanding global population. Producing bioenergy crops on marginal lands--farmland suboptimal for food crops--could help meet energy goals while minimizing competition with food production. However, the ecological costs and benefits of growing bioenergy feedstocks--primarily annual grain crops--on marginal lands have...

Adaptive management for ecosystem services.

Management of natural resources for the production of ecosystem services, which are vital for human well-being, is necessary even when there is uncertainty regarding system response to management action. This uncertainty is the result of incomplete controllability, complex internal feedbacks, and non-linearity that often interferes with desired management outcomes, and insufficient understandin...

Ecosystem Services in Agricultural Landscapes: A Spatially Explicit Approach to Support Sustainable Soil Management

Soil degradation has been associated with a lack of adequate consideration of soil ecosystem services. We demonstrate a broadly applicable method for mapping changes in the supply of two priority soil ecosystem services to support decisions about sustainable land-use configurations. We used a landscape-scale study area of 302 km(2) in northern Victoria, south-eastern Australia, which has been c...

Prairie Dog Decline Reduces the Supply of Ecosystem Services and Leads to Desertification of Semiarid Grasslands

Anthropogenic impacts on North American grasslands, a highly endangered ecosystem, have led to declines of prairie dogs, a keystone species, over 98% of their historical range. While impacts of this loss on maintenance of grassland biodiversity have been widely documented, much less is known about the consequences on the supply of ecosystem services. Here we assessed the effect of prairie dogs ...
